PUNE: Nearly 50% of 716 districts in India are currently recording large deficiency in monsoon rainfall, while another 19% are deficient, IMD data showed on Wednesday. Overall, the all-India monsoon rainfall deficiency during the June 1-14 period is 53%.
Experts said the impact of a full-blown El Nino was already visible on the southwest monsoon pattern. All subdivisions of Maharashtra have a rain deficiency of over 79-80%, as monsoon have evaded most parts of the state this month so far. Regions like Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi (30%), east UP (97%), west UP (83%), west MP (73%) and east MP (88%) are also largely deficient, data showed.
Akshay Deoras, research scientist at University of Reading, UK, who is closely following the southwest monsoon, told TOI: “The early onset of El Nino means it will modulate the monsoon throughout the season”.
GP Sharma, president of private weather forecaster Skymet, told TOI, “The monsoon onset was delayed due to cyclone Biparjoy, while its further progress has also been weak. The monsoon is expected to be weak for another week. Unless there is a good system over the Bay of Bengal, it may remain weak.”
He further added that the rain from Biparjoy might remain confined to Saurashtra and Kutch.
