NEW DELHI: The additional chief metropolitan magistrate court in Bengaluru summoned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah, deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar on Wednesday in a defamation case that was lodged by the BJP.
The complaint was filed before the magistrare court, which deals exclusively with criminal cases involving elected former and sitting MPs/MLAs.
The court has acknowledged the complaint and recognised the alleged offences under Sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code. The case has been scheduled for recording the sworn statement on July 27. Summons have been ordered to be issued to all the respondents.
The complaint was filed by S Keshavaprasad, the state secretary of the BJP, on May 9. The complaint accuses the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) of publishing advertisements in major newspapers on May 5, 2023, ahead of the assembly election. The advertisements claimed that the previous BJP government had engaged in “40 percent corruption” and had looted Rs 1.5 lakh crore over the course of four years. The complaint alleges that these claims were “baseless, prejudiced, and defamatory” and aimed at tarnishing the BJP’s image.
