VIJAYAWADA: A class X student was allegedly set ablaze by four boys in Bapatla district on Friday early morning. While the bereaved family made allegations against three youngsters from another village, police are yet to confirm the facts of the case.
Vakul Jindal, SP, Bapatla told TOI that Uppala Amarnath (15) was a native of Uppalavaripalam of Cherukupalli mandal studying in class X in a local government school. He used to go to Rajavolu village of Cherukupalli Mandal for tuition everyday morning. On Friday at around 5.30AM, Amarnath was found burnt, listening to his hue and cry, locals extinguished the fire and rushed him to Guntur government general hospital. The boy died while receiving treatment. An autopsy was conducted on Friday evening.
“The boy in his dying declaration mentioned a person identified as Venkateshwara Reddy (21), a native of Rajavolu working as a daily wage labourer. But the boy did not mention particularly whether Reddy had set him ablaze or he died by suicide due to Reddy’s abetment. Police took Reddy into their custody and are interrogating him, it is yet to be confirmed. The case is still under investigation”, SP added.
Police during the investigation found that in the recent past Amarnath and his family reprimanded Venkateshwara Reddy for misbehaving and harassing Amarnath’s sister (17).
Reddy and Amarnath had an altercation regarding the same in the past.
Amarnath’s mother and grandfather alleged that Venkateshwara Reddy and three others poured petrol on Amarnath and torched him when he was on his way to tuition. In the recent past, Reddy was reprimanded before his parents and other villagers, hence he bore a grudge and brutally killed Amarnath while he was on his way to tuition. Police denied naming the other three suspects.
Cherkupalli police registered a case under IPC section 302 (murder), 354 D (stalking), and POCSO Act. Police are interrogating Reddy and are about to take the other three suspects into their custody. Police are yet to receive the autopsy report to confirm whether it is murder or suicide. A comprehensive investigation is underway.
