BENGALURU: The Kalaburagi bench of the Karnataka high court on Wednesday quashed sedition charges against the management of Shaheen primary and high school in Bidar over a school play that was reportedly against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
Justice Hemant Chandangoudar allowed the petitions filed by Allauddin and three others, and quashed the proceedings initiated against them. The details of the order are awaited.
On January 26, 2020, based on a complaint filed by Nilesh Rakshala, an activist, the Bidar New Town police had booked a sedition case against the management of Shaheen Education Society for staging an anti-CAA play in the school on January 21.
Police initiated prosecution against the school authorities under relevant IPC sections for “anti-national activities” and “spreading misinformation” about parliamentary laws.
Pursuant to the said FIR, Fareeda Begum, the headmistress of Shaheen School, and Najamunissa, the mother of a girl student whose dialogue was treated by the police as insulting to PM Narendra Modi, were arrested. However, they were released two weeks later following an order passed by a sessions court.
Additionally, a PIL was also filed seeking action against the police for questioning the schoolchildren whilst police were in uniform and carrying weapons.
