BHUBANESWAR: The state cabinet led by chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday recommended a proposal to the Centre for inclusion of Saora language in the 8th schedule of the Constitution of India.
The inclusion will help in the preservation, promotion, propagation of Saora language and culture. Activities like publication, creation of content and recognition will get momentum because of the inclusion.
The inclusion will create an eco-system to facilitate research and studies anchored around preservation, promotion and propagation of Saora language. More than 5 lakh Saora speaking indigenous people will be benefited with this decision.
In April, the Sahitya Akademi, national academy of letters, and the Odisha Sahitya Akademi had jointly organized a two-day Saora Language Convention here to deliberate on literature, oral tradition, culture, stories, poetry, music and other things related to this language.
Officials had spoken in the convention that Saora language will be documented by Sahitya Akademi for further promotion and propagation. It is not a recognized language of the country, but it is one of the oldest tribal languages of the state.
The Sahitya Akademi every year promotes four unrecognized languages. This year, it has chosen the Saora language from Odisha. It will find out where it is spoken geographically, how many speakers are there and what kind of literature has been written. It will also see research publications on the language and newspapers or magazines in this language.
This language has its own script ‘Sorang Sompeng’. The housing pattern, terrace cultivation, traditional soil conservation system, dress and ornaments, musical instruments, and war dance are some of the cultural symbols distinguishing them from the other indigenous people.
Saora people are staying in Odisha and other states of the country including Andhra Pradesh. Most of the Saora people are staying in Gajapati and Rayagada districts of Odisha.
