JAIPUR: When it comes to saving life, the families of renal patients cross all boundaries and limitations.
Six families swapped kidneys for saving their near and dear ones. All the six families have donors, but they were not found suitable donors for their relatives. In such a situation, all the families decided to swap kidneys to each other.
Nishant, a resident of Behror, has B-positive blood group, while his donor mother Lalita Devi’s blood group was O-positive. She was not a suitable donor for her son. Mainpuri (UP)’s Sarita Devi gave her kidney to Nishant.
Sarita Devi was not found as a suitable donor for her husband, Dinesh Yadav, as their blood groups were not matching. Swaroop Kanwar of Didwana gave her kidney to Yadav.
Mahipal Singh, son of Kanwar, received a kidney from Sriganganagar’s Gauri Shankar.
Shankar’s wife Rajni Sharma received a kidney from Munni Devi from Jhunjhunu. Devi’s daughter Preeti Soni received a kidney from Ramesh Chand, a resident of Jaipur. Chand’s patient Usha Shakya received a kidney from Lalita Devi.
The swap of kidneys among six families was a difficult task for the private hospital where the transplants were performed simultaneously. Six swap kidney transplants in a single day in one hospital are rarely mentioned in the medical history of the country.
“If the donor is ready to give a kidney and there is no blood group match, then it is a very disappointing situation. In such a situation, patients are being treated through swap kidney donation. A swap kidney transplant can happen when there are many patients and donors,” said Dr Suraj Godara, head of the department (nephrology) of the hospital.
Hospital’s kidney transplant unit (director) Dr TC Sadasukhi said all the six transplant operations were done on May 8, 2023. Four surgeons started operations at 8 am in 4 operation theatres, which lasted for about 12 hours and could be completed by 8 pm. He was kept in the intensive care unit in an infection-free environment and was discharged after 10 days of recovery.
In the recent follow-up, all the recipients and all the donors are doing well.
