NEW DELHI: Following PM Narendra Modi’s meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last month, his aide Andriy Yermak dialled NSA Ajit Doval seeking India’s support for implementation of the ‘Ukraine Peace Formula‘ – a 10-point peace plan the president had proposed last year to end the conflict.
Yermak also discussed plans for the proposed global peace summit in July that Ukraine wants PM Modi to participate in. According to Ukraine, Yermak emphasised the need to involve the widest possible range of countries, including the Global South, in the event.
“Recent events have once again proved that the Ukrainian Peace Formula is more relevant than ever – for both Ukraine and the whole world. We are working with partners to prepare the Global Summit on the implementation of the formula. We expect India to take part in it,” said Yermak, who heads Zelenskyy’s office.
Ukraine said the phone call was in order to coordinate the implementation of the “agreements reached by Volodymyr Zelenskyy following the talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his participation in the G7 Summit held in Japan on May 20”.
“The main topic of the conversation was the implementation of the Ukrainian Peace Formula, in particular, the consolidation of international support for the Ukrainian peace plan and the possibility of India joining the implementation of its individual points,” said the President’s office in a statement.
Zelenskyy had sought support from Modi for his peace plan, which he announced at the G20 Bali Summit, in his meeting with the Indian PM in Hiroshima and also in a phone call to Modi last year. India has so far remained non-committal on the plan that has been rejected by Russia, and the government has also ruled out any invite to Zelenskyy for the G20 summit in September.
Yermak also briefed Doval in detail on the current situation on the “frontline, as well as on Russia’s ongoing missile and drone terror against Ukrainian cities and civilians”.
